Jeff Petrie
USNA ’89
Homepage: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=197942610Jeff Petrie grew up in Eugene, Oregon, attaining national competitive status in gymnastics while in high school. Recruited by the U.S. Naval Academy and other colleges, after careful deliberation he selected USNA in blind faith--and at the recommendation of his grandfather, who had been a Navy officer in WWII. Petrie believed even then that giving back to America was the "right thing to do."
Elected varsity gymnastics team captain during the 1989 season, Petrie graduated in May of 1989. As an ensign, he first served as the Assistant Varsity Gymnastics Coach in Annapolis before attending Surface Warfare Officers' School in Coronado, California. He reported aboard USS Kirk (FF-1087) in Long Beach in 1990, serving first as the ship's Combat Information Center Officer, First Lieutenant, and then Navigator--deploying with the ship to the Persian Gulf in 1992. He left the Navy in the summer of 1993 when Kirk was decommissioned, just as the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy went into effect.
