While casually walking through the gate to my engineering job one mornng before the recent elections, I was handed a leaflet which appeared to be nothing more than a voting guide. Upon reading it in my office, I recognized the leaflet as a religious Right newspaper informing people of how candidates for office had voted on such things as gays in the military, spousal benefits for lesbians and gays, and abortion issues. After enduring a lifetime of discrimination -- I was forced to resign as a naval officer 16 years ago -- I was outraged. Oh but the next day I got a little revenge. While again strolling to work, an individual tried to hand me another one of the foul papers. Instead of accepting one, I looked at him directly in the eye and spoke the following words loudly and in the midst of strangers: "I am gay!" His sickeningly sweet smile suddenly vanished. His mouth dropped open, and and his eyes were immediately filled with fear and complete surprise. He couldn't believe that someone had just said those three words to him. What wonderful words they are though, especially when spoken to those who would deny us our rights as American citizens.
