Eric Shangle was a world-ranked swimmer in high school who entered the Naval Academy on July 1, 1993. He had no idea what he was getting into. Eric had visited the Academy while growing up and immediately fell in love the the "yard" and the prestigious uniforms, but he didn't realize what it truly meant to be a midshipman. Lucky for Eric, he was able to easily embrace life as a mid in 36th Company.

While at the Academy, Eric swam all four years. He was co-captain of the men's swim team for his firstie year (1996-97). Swimming took up most of his time while there, but he did manage to squeeze in a few classes. He majored in Ocean Engineering and eventually became a MetOc (Meteorology and Oceanography) officer. This proved to be a great fit for Eric.
